Keynote Address: The Impact of Global and Domestic Climate on Health and Health Systems – Tom Cullison, MD

Environmental and demographic trends impact all aspects of society, including health systems. Understanding risk is key to dealing with reality. Regardless of one’s view, climate change data demonstrates climatic events increasingly impact large population concentrations both in low-lying coastal areas, as well as inland population centers. Resilient health systems manage risk by studying likely local threats, developing mitigation plans and developing flexibility in response. Likewise, predictable demographic change, particularly societal aging in most developed countries, necessitates capabilities different than most health systems offer today.

Panel Session: Climate Change Impact on Regional, State and Local Emergencey Predaredness, Sharon Ricks, MA & Rick Rhodes, MEP

State health emergency management officials will outline impacts on climate change and VA Emergency management specialists will discuss the current and future risks expected from global climate change. Procedure changes and unique resources will be explored at length.

• Understand how a state surrounded by water and under constant threat of natural disasters prepares for and responds to disasters.
• Understand how the VA in Tampa is addressing the impact of climate change on their emergency preparedness activities

Breakout Session: Successful Transitioning for the Military Professional to Civilian Healthcare Project Management, H. Jay Hicks Jr. & Sandy Hoath Cobb

This session will be of special interest to the uniformed members of AAMA. Healthcare Project Management will be presented as a viable career option for military personnel who will soon be transitioning to civilian careers and who might not realize they already possess the necessary skills for this career track. Participants will receive expert advice from those who have already made this transition, and will be will be offered an opportunity to devise an action  plan and personal strategy related to career change. This strategy can be implemented quickly to improve your ability to target and obtain exciting job options in the Healthcare project management career field!

Global Session: Success Stories in the TED Talk format 

St. Jude International Outreach Program on Pediatric Oncology, George Velez, MBA, CFAAMA 

We will discuss how to improve the survival rates of children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases worldwide, through the sharing of knowledge, technology and organizational skills, implementation of new approaches to treat pediatric cancer globally and generation of international networks committed to eradicating cancer in children, as well as the following:

• Development of treatment guidelines for the most common childhood cancers.
• Training and education initiatives in hematology-oncology care, nursing care, infectious diseases care, prevention, and control, laboratory medicine, anatomic pathology and data management.
• Regional pediatric hematology-oncology networks created in Central America/Caribbean and the Middle East.

Transitional Care: An Innovative Care Coordination Approach to Care Redesign in Medicare Bundled Payment Cardiovascular Surgery Patients, Sara Conn, Rachel Canady & Frank Fiorito

An existing team of nurses were chosen to perform a Care Coordinator role, tasked with identifying, managing and tracking patients in the Bundled Payment Care Initiative in an effort to redesign care with emphasis on pre-operative education, transitional care and prevention of hospital readmissions for 30 days post discharge. Early results show an improvement in readmission rates from baseline years of 2010-2012 for CABG and Valve Medicare patients readmitted to any hospital of 28.4% to 17.24% for Q1 2014. This impact had a per case readmission cost reduction of $2,255.

Creating Medical Destinations for Multidisiciplinary Neurological Specialty Care Bundles: What to Consider, How to Construct the Bundle(s) and More, Candace Tilquest, MA, MMHC

This session will demonstrate how to use Time-Driven Activity Based Costing (TDABC) to develop neurological specialty care bundles that can be presented to regional payers and/or employers to drive neurosciences business. It will provide neurosciences service line leader’s practical examples of what costs and risks need to be considered to build these bundles.
