2004 Diagnosis Code Update

The 2004 diagnosis code update is published! This particular document includes new codes, revised codes and deleted codes and is effective October 1, 2003 (remember that not all payors accept the new codes immediately).

There are no current changes to the neoplasm codes, but other codes of interest to oncology coders include the following new codes:

282.41             Sickle-cell thalassemia without crisis

282.42                      Sickle-cell thalassemia with crisis

282.49                      Other thalassemia

282.64                      Sickle-cell/Hb-C disease with crisis

282.68                      Other sickle-cell disease without crisis

289.81                      Primary hypercoagulable state

289.82                      Secondary hypercoagulable state

289.89                      Other specified diseases of blood and blood forming organs

799.89             Other ill-defined conditions

V58.63             Long term (current) use of
                        antiplatelet/antithrombotic

V65.19             Other person consulting on behalf of
                        another person

Following are invalid codes (potentially replaced by more specific codes listed above):

282.4                         Thalassemias

Diagnosis codes with revised verbiage include:

282.60                      Sickle-cell disease, unspecified
