American College of
Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACOS-CoC) Liaison Report - May
2006
If you have discovered through routine
chart audits that your cancer program's percentage of staging accuracy is
low in large due to physician misunderstanding or lack of knowledge of the
AJCC staging guidelines, the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) has
made available a new staging tool. Staging Moments Program is an online
staging tool including TNM Slide Library that includes brief, case-based
presentations intended for departmental weekly conferences (e.g.,
morbidity and mortality or tumor board). The program includes slide sets
that are site-specific cases, the staging system for the organ site, and
the final stage for the case.
Sites are now available on breast, colon, and
pancreas through the program’s website at
http://www.cancerstaging.org/education/media.html. Additional sites to
be added in the future include melanoma, lung, cervix, ovary, and prostate.
You are encouraged to take advantage of this new program in order to enhance
the quality of your AJCC staging. For further information on the addition
of new slide sets and other educational resources available, logon to
www.facs.org.
The ACoS-CoC Report was prepared by ACOA/ACoS-CoC liaison, Jeannie O’Leary.
Her role as liaison is to enhance our relationship and collaboration by
providing a forum for the exchange of ideas, initiatives, critical issues,
and actions that impact cancer care, data collection, and research. We have
the opportunity to bring matters of importance for ACOA to the CoC, as well
as communicate CoC activities to the ACOA. If you have input on particular
issues regarding credentialing and ACoS standards, please contact
Jeannie O’Leary.
